Don’t Hire a Web Designer That You Won’t Listen To

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Don’t Hire a Web Designer That You Won’t Listen To

Please don’t hire a web designer that you won’t listen to. Providing you have hired a good web designer you should take what they say if they have a strong suggestion/opinion on something. I’ve worked with business owners since the internet took off. We have built all kinds of websites with all kinds of software’s and we have seen all kinds of scenarios. That means we’ve seen a lot of things that clients want that are not good for their website.

Having seen and experienced all kinds of good an bad things we try to talk client’s out of making a bad decision. Some of those things are simple things and some are more technical. On a simple level wanting and fighting for a specific size width for a website is a bad deal. Yes, it looks perfect on your monitor and wanting it that size so it looks good for you does not mean it will look good for someone else. With today’s technology and devices that website changes for every device and forcing everyone to look at it the way you want and not the way they want will effect your traffic.

On a more technical side building and growing a website while it is live is much better than waiting until it is totally done. This keeps the search engine crawlers coming back to search and update your website which helps get your indexing up faster. We had a client that could not finish his website because it wasn’t perfect, keep in mind it was 10 times better than his current site. He never went live with it and eventually lost his business. If it had been live and searched he would have done much better.

I’ll be the first to admit that at times we don’t get along with every client and have even fired some. Usually it comes down to a difference in opinion. While some client’s are hard to please others will take suggestions and be successful while making the tweaks as they grow.

There is no such thing as a perfect website and once you understand that it’s easy to complete it and get it out there making money for you. No website should eve be “done.” You should be updating it, adding to it, redesigning it when needed and keeping it fresh and relevant weekly. This is your best chance to making it near perfect for all your viewers.

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Who’s on a Barter Exchange

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tips For Hiring a Web Designer

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Who is on a Barter Exchange

This is a tricky one. I say don’t hire a web designer who is on a barter exchange or club because over the years of taking on client’s from other companies we have see the disaster that comes from many barter style companies.

Think about it – many people go there because they don’t have a lot of business or are trying to grow their business. That means that their reputation is not quite good enough to stand on it’s own. So many of them are learning as they start out. Sure you don’t have to pay out any cash but you are still paying for it. What good is it to pay for something if it doesn’t work for you?

The usual scenario we see is a mediocre website that has no SEO tied into it and missing a lot of crucial elements for a searchable site. What’s worse is that it usually is an outdated software that is tough to manage yourself. That means you have to go back to that person for updates and as often as your site should be updated, that’s a lot of bartering. The bottom line is that it does nothing to drive traffic to it and that means little results.

I’m not saying that every web designer on a barter exchange is mediocre but I’m saying think about it before you hire. Go out and get multiple quotes and ask lots of questions. We even had a client that wanted us to go onto the barter group to keep his business. We refused and lost the business but it was better than being on the exchange and loosing our reputation.

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Unless They Are Good at SEO

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tip For Hiring a Web Designer

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Unless They Are Good at SEO

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Unless They Are Really Good at SEO. In today’s market you’d think that every web developer is an SEO expert but that is not the case. Most web designers today only do websites because they are doing websites on the side for extra cash.

SEO is an important part of web design and when your website is built it should be optimized for the internet – unless you don’t care about getting your website found. Some companies are OK with not being found online. They might have it only for their customers and manually send them to the website by a link. However most of the businesses we see want search engine results.

I have seen it for many years now – web designers don’t care about SEO because it’s too complicated. We meet with the owners of their new website and then have to fix the site for better optimization. Those days should be over but they are not.

Think of your website as a car that drives traffic to you or you to the traffic. Like any car you need a good engine and transmission in order for that vehicle to take you where you want to go. Getting a website with no SEO is like having a beautiful car but no engine. Looks great but it does not drive any traffic to you.

Every site we build we SEO it and connect it to the search engines so that they know you’re there and wait for your to communicate with them. If a web designer tells you that the SEO is done once the site is live they are not knowledgeable and should be avoided.

SEO is more than a few plugins. Be careful when you hear that they added some SEO plugins to the site, or that you just need some videos or back-links. That version of SEO is like taking your car and replacing the engine with bike peddles – that makes you the engine and you won’t go too far.

In a market where everyone and their grandmother are web developers you really need to hire a qualified company – not person. There are so many commercials that makes web design look so easy that even you could do it. That’s true but that’s as far as it goes. Many of those easy building sites don’t perform SEO but fear not! They will up charge you for mediocre SEO work that still won’t be too effective.

If you’re going to hire a web designer please look at companies that have a stronger SEO focus than bragging about websites. Look at their clients and testimonials and choose between the 3 different companies you interview. You’ll make better decisions and that will help your business succeed.

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Based on Emotions

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tip For Hiring a Web Designer

Don’t Hire Someone Based on Emotions

Here is a very important tip: Don’t hire someone based on emotions. I know it sounds easy but it’s not. I have had so many conversations with start up companies, and even large established companies who hire based on their emotion. So what does that mean?

The conversation starts out with someone coming to use because their website isn’t working for them. We look it over and realize that is is a very basic site with little chance of doing anything for promoting their business. It comes around to “Who built it?” Thant’s when the emotions come out. Things like:

  • My nephew is trying to get into this industry
  • My friend’s daughter has been playing around with website and I want to help her
  • My kid is in college taking internet courses and he needs the practice
  • My friend helped me out – he does his own site

The truth is that however good it makes you feel helping someone out the worse it’s going to be for you. I have seen this time after time. I’m all for helping people but when the survival of your company depends of a quality functioning website you really need to put your emotions aside and make a better business decision.

The internet changes daily, software’s change weekly and web designers pop up even faster. You really should think long term when it comes to the survival of your business. Hiring somebody because you want to save some money and help out a friend becomes very costly in the end. You will eventually go to a professional web designer and spend more money to do the whole thing over. But that’s not all the cost – there is the money you didn’t make because nobody could find you and then there’s the competition growing stronger because they took business that should have been yours.

IF you want to help a friend get the site built properly and then let them have the keys to the site so they can learn how to do it correctly vs learning from a YouTube video that’s years old and outdated.

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Who Only Knows 1 Programming Language

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tip For Hiring a Sarasota Web Designer

Don’t Hire a Web Designer Who Only Knows 1 Programming Language

We see this all the time – “Web Designers” that only know how to build websites in one language. That’s a sign that you should continue to search out better web designers. The reason is that there are many different software brands out there and some are better than others, depending on the needs for your website.

The worst part of it is that the one software they use is usually a cookie cutter style website and that is bad for your business. The scenario is they probably used that software a few times because it was easy and instead of becoming a good web designer building for the client’s needs they chose to be a limited designer but easy for their own needs.

We have used all kinds of software over the years and some are better than others depending what you want to accomplish. We’ve even write custom code from scratch when needed. We’ve used Drupal, ModX, Joomla, WordPress, JS, Boot strap, Angular and so on. A great web designer will know the different application for the your specific needs and then build the site around those needs. Some developers will still use the older software’s because they are fluent in it. The challenge you might have is that you won’t be able to learn how to update it anytime soon and that leaves you dependent on your designer. That can get costly over time.

Anyone who only knows one kind of software to develop in will be very good at selling that style otherwise they won’t be able to sell you anything else. Take some time to meet many developers and get many opinions. Then back them up with their experience, clients, years in business and for sure look at some of their current work. Don’t just jump into the first quote and certainly don’t base it only on price. Buying cheap will cost you in the long run. I see it every week!

Don’t Hire Someone Unless They Are Full Time Web Designers

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Tip For Hiring a Web Designer

Don’t Hire Someone Unless They Are Full Time Web Designers

Here is a very important tip: Don’t hire someone unless they are a full time web designer. I know it sounds simple but it’s not. It seems everyone these days are a web designer – I’ll have a latte and a side of some webdesign. Real estate agents build websites, DJ’s, TV commercials make it look easy for anyone to design a website and it never ends. Free websites, easy websites, fast websites, cool websites . . . . .

While everyone is running around building websites it is hurting the web design industry and that dilutes the really good companies out there. There are not licensing, certifications, apprenticeships, degrees or any kind of training needed to be a web designer. So many people start building as sites for some weekend cash and then build it up to a nice side job. These side gigs bring the pricing down where larger companies can’t compete. When they leave the market the industry gets weaker and less talented.

I have seen “Web Designers” (and I use that term loosely), come and go year after year. The reason is they don’t keep up with the latest updates, upgrades, internet needs and software challenges. While they are making coffee or showing houses they aren’t building any experience with all the new techniques. They only have limited skills that quickly go out of style. So hiring your barista to build your website will have it’s consequences.

It all comes back to effectiveness – do you want your site to get found? How about preventing hackers from taking it over? What about having all the functions work? You might think just because it looks nice that it’s safe, effective, and will be on the top page for every search imaginable – Sorry – Probably not.

We actually had a restoration client hire us and asked all kinds of questions for every little detail we did. They learned what we were doing and got all the knowledge they thought they needed. The they wanted all their money back and now they are trying to sell websites on the side.

Do yourself a favor when it comes to your business website – hire a full time web designer, not a part time web gig person. You’ll be happy you did and you won’t get caught up in a bad scenario.
